Since the beginning of Doctor Who, the Doctor’s outfit has been an incredibly important part of who they are. Often, the outfit shows who they are, and what kind of Doctor they’re going to be.

Jodie Whittaker’s 13th Doctor outfit was announced today on Twitter. It certainly has a couple aspects that we definitely need to take a look at!

The Thirteenth Doctor’s outfit

The Thirteenth Doctor’s outfit is definitely taking from the past. It seems to be a culmination of Doctor’s before her, coming together to make one. There seems to be a lot of six in the outfit, with all of the different colors, the stripes on the t-shirt especially! Then there’s the long coat, that many Doctors have worn before, but this one is more sports-like. It’s definitely not made out of older cloth like we’ve seen before.

Finally the shoes. I have to say, I love the striped socks sticking out of a mature boot! If there’s anything we can say, it’s that, if going by this outfit, we can expect a fun and younger Doctor.

How outfits portray the Doctor

The colors and style of the outfit often portray the personality of the character. Tom Baker and Peter Davison were the first to have a more whimsical outfit, which showed that they were younger and more fun than their predecessors.

As the years have gone by, this act hasn’t changed. When Doctor Who was brought back in 2005, Christopher Eccleston brought back the Doctor in a rougher outfit than we’d seen before. This was to portray the rough and tough and anger he felt after the Time War.

Finally, in the most recent Doctor, we know that Peter Capaldi specifically wanted to dress more simply. His outfit stemmed back to ideas from Doctor’s before him, including the first and second Doctor, to show he was planning to be more serious.

The TARDIS

Another change to see is the TARDIS. Whittaker’s TARDIS seems to be more like the Classic TARDIS, but it is a bit darker than what we’ve seen. It’s definitely a change in the phoneboxes since the show has come back, but it’s nice to go back to classic roots.

Also, if you notice, the St. John Ambulance sticker is gone from the TARDIS! This does beg the question, what happens to the TARDIS in the Christmas episode?

From the outfit to the TARDIS, it all seems to give it a classic feel. The outfit has the presence of older Doctors, as does the phone box. It will definitely be interesting to see what exactly Jodie Whittaker’s Doctor herself will be like!
