Game of Thrones has traditionally done very well during awards season, but not at every awards show. It routinely cleans up at the Emmys, for example, but the Golden Globes have given it far less love; Peter Dinklage (Tyrion Lannister) won the award for Best Supporting Actor for his work on the show’s first season, and that’s pretty much been it. Sure, the show as a whole has been nominated in the Best Television Series category a few times, and Lena Headey (Cersei Lannister) got a Best Supporting Actress nod for her work on season 6, but Dinklage is still the only person involved with the show to have won a Golden Globe.
According to awards site Gold Derby, HBO has a plan to change that. The network has submitted Emilia Clarke (Daenerys Targaryen) and Kit Harington (Jon Snow) for consideration in the categories of Best Actress in a TV Drama and Best Actor in a TV Drama, respectively. This is unusual for HBO, which generally submits Game of Thrones cast members for awards consideration in greater numbers, and in the Supporting Actor/Actress categories. But that strategy hasn’t worked for them, since no GoT star has been nominated for a Golden Globe since Dinklage in 2012.
With Dany and Jon Snow having gotten more attention in season 7, perhaps HBO thinks that by narrowing the field to one star per category there will be less danger of vote splitting. If it works, Clarke and Harington will both get their first Golden Globe nomination.
The 2018 Golden Globes will be hosted by Seth Meyers, a well-known fan of Game of Thrones. He’s the guy behind both this…

So that can only be a good thing. The show airs on January 7, 2018 on NBC.
