Captain Who?: How come we don’t know Mark Gatiss’s character name?

BBC, Doctor Who Christmas Special

With the Doctor Who Christmas Special tomorrow, we’re doing all we can to get ready for the magical regeneration episode. There’s still a lot we don’t know about the episode, and rightfully so! We don’t want one of the biggest episodes in NuWho to be spoiled for us.

And, thankfully, people have been very good about keeping spoilers to themselves. There have been screenings for public and press in the UK, and nothing major has spilled from anything I’ve seen.

However, there is one thing that normally we would know by now, that we haven’t received an answer about. What is Matt Gattis’s character’s name? We know he plays a World War I captain, but that’s it. Even on IMDB, he’s credited as only playing The Captain.

This is a title we would expect to be given to a small character that doesn’t have much to do with the plot. However, based on the trailers and synopsis, he’s a huge part of the episode. So why does the Captain remain unnamed?

Perhaps that’s part of the story, and it will be a huge reveal at the end of the episode. We know that he’s taken out of time in the middle of a fight, likely by the Enchanted Glass people. Perhaps before he’s set back in his timeline, we learn his name. And maybe this has a huge change on the plot and is part of the scene that left everyone shaken.

It just leaves me slightly off that he’s just known as ‘The Captain’. It gives me memories of the Master when he was using the Fob Watch to hide at the end of the universe. It’s too odd not to have an important piece of the plot attached.

But maybe the rumors and all the information we don’t have is making me overcritical.
