Doctor Who: Moffat left a large plot hole open about the Twelfth Doctor
BBC America, Doctor Who
Doctor Who special Twice Upon a Time gave us great interactions with One and Twelve. But there’s one thing we were all expecting that didn’t happen! And it’s left a major plot hole.
When announced that David Bradley would be playing the First Doctor in Twice Upon a Time, people assumed the episode would be about the 50th Anniversary. Throughout the filming and then lead up to the episode, we all looked for hints. But then as I watched the episode myself, waiting for the fiftieth anniversary to be a part of it all, it never came up.
People in the comments are incredibly upset about this huge plothole left undone. Originally, Testimony seemed to be the perfect way to bring the Twelfth Doctor into a place where he doesn’t belong — it’s just his memories in a glass object. It’s a great way to bring the Doctor into the fight for Gallifrey! But it never came up.
Honestly, it’s unlikely that this was ever really part of the plot. It seemed to truly be only about the regeneration for both Doctor’s from the beginning. So where does this leave us, especially with everyone gone?
This is where a showrunner leaving leaves the fandom in a lurch. Chris Chibnall is about to have to deal with his own issues, and he won’t have time to fix something his predecessor left out. So, suffice to say, we’re likely to be left in the dark about how ‘all thirteen!’ doctors helped save Gallifrey.
Maybe it’s something we’re better off imagining for our own. It could be Testimony. It could be a time loop we don’t know about. Maybe we’ll know in the 60th Anniversary, which will hopefully be happening. But for now, we’re left with questions, which is exactly how Moffat should leave things.
