2017 is over, and the various Hollywood professional guilds are gearing up to give out awards to the best of the year. Game of Thrones may not have taken home any Golden Globes, but awards season isn’t over.
First up are the Producers Guild Awards, which will be held on January 20 at the Beverly Hilton in Los Angeles, because all of these are held in Los Angeles. Producing is a vitally important but under-appreciated part of the show; in addition to David Benioff and Dan Weiss, executive producers on Game of Thrones include Carolyn Strauss, Frank Doelger, Bernadette Caulfield, Bryan Cogman, Lisa McAtackney and Chris Newman.
This year, the production is up for the biggest award of the night: the Norman Felton Award for Outstanding Producer of Episodic Television, Drama. Here’s what it’s up against:
- Big Little Lies (season 1)
- The Crown (season 2)
- Game of Thrones (season 7)
- The Handmaid’s Tale (season 1)
- Stranger Things (season 2)
Game of Thrones has been nominated for this award every year it’s been on, as it should be. With the cast jetting all over the world and corralling hundreds of extras and horses and whatnot, this is a hard show to produce. But it’s only won once, for season 5.
The Handmaid’s Tale has been sweeping awards season so far, with both an Emmy and a Golden Globe for Best Drama. Will it take the PGA, too, or will Game of Thrones fight back?
Crew members are also nominated for several awards from the Make-Up and Hair Stylists Guild, with winners to be revealed on February 24. Here’s who’s up for what:
Best Period/Character Make-Up
- The Crown (Ivana Primorac)
- Game of Thrones (Jane Walker, Nicola Matthews)
- Glow (Lana Horochowski, Maurine Burke)
- Saturday Night Live (Louie Zakarian, Amy Tagliamonti, Jason Milani)
- Stranger Things (Amy Forsythe, Jillian Erickson)
Best Period/Character Hair Styling
- The Crown (Ivana Primorac)
- Game of Thrones (Kevin Alexander, Candice Banks)
- Glow (Theraesa Rivers, Valerie Jackson)
- Saturday Night Live (Jodi Mancuso, Jennifer Serio, Inga Thrasher)
- Vikings (Dee Corcoran, Zuelika Delaney, Peter Burke)
Best Special Make-Up Effects
- Game of Thrones (Barrie Gower, Sarah Gower)
- The Orville (Howard Berger, Tami Lane, Garett Immell)
- Saturday Night Live (Louie Zakarian, Jason Milani, Tom Denier)
- Stranger Things (Amy Forsythe, Jillian Erickson)
- The Walking Dead (Greg Nicotero)
The show was nominated in all three of these categories last year, as were all the same crew members save Nicola Matthews — this is her first nomination from the guild. For the 2017 show, this crew won both the Best Period/Character Make-Up Award and the Best Period/Character Hair Styling Award, although the Best Special Make-Up Effects awards went to Westworld.
Best of luck to all the nominees…but especially those involved with Thrones.
Next: Game of Thrones will return to Dubrovnik one last time to film scenes for season 8
