Shannon Woodward recently explained that the kiss between Elsie and Clementine was not “intentionally sexual”.

In first season of Westworld, Shannon Woodward’s character, Elsie, was established as a smart and savvy Delos employee. When she was first introduced in the pilot episode, there was a tender moment between Elsie and Clementine. During the scene, Elsie kissed Clementine on the lips, but it was never explored.

Many fans believed that this moment hinted at the character’s sexuality, but it was never confirmed.  Over a year had passed since the episode aired, and fans were still curious about the scene. Thanks to recent Tweet by Woodward, we know a bit more about the kiss and its context.

Shannon Woodward Clarified Why Elsie Kissed Clementine In Westworld Season 1

During Westworld Season 1, Elsie found herself caught in the middle of a power struggle between Dr. Ford and the Delos board. By the end of the season, she was missing and presumed dead; however, it’s likely she will return in Season 2. Although her whereabouts are unknown on the show, the actress who portrays Elsie is still active with fans on social media.

Shannon Woodward’s Tweet

Recently, Woodward was asked about Elsie’s kiss with Clementine and if her character is bi-sexual. She explained in a short tweet that the scene was never “intentionally sexual”:

"There was a part of the scene that was cut, where Bernard said they had worked on her upper lip to make it the softest thing in the world. Elsie was like, prove it. It’s intention was never sexual, as far as I ever understood."

When Westworld Season 1 first aired, the question was raised regarding whether the show properly represented the LGBT community.  Elsie’s sexuality had been brought up in many debates; however, it appears that the scene had no bearing on the character. In the context of the scene that was cut, it is just a case of curiosity with no sexual implications.

This doesn’t prove Elsie’s sexuality in any way, but it does bring clarity to the scene. If she comes back for Season 2, it’s possible that the show could explore the character. For now, we are still left wondering if the character is alive. Hopefully, we will learn more about Westworld Season 2 in the coming months.
