Westworld Producer J.J. Abrams’ new Sci-Fi Drama Demimonde gets a series pickup from HBO.

J.J. Abrams is one of the most high-profile Hollywood directors, but he’s also one of the most prolific TV producers/creators working today. Although he’s known for bringing blockbuster franchises like Star Trek and Star Wars back to life, his work on TV might be more impressive. Over the past 20 years, Abrams has created/co-created several beloved projects, including Felicity, Alias, Lost and Fringe.

Since 2016, Abrams has served as an executive-producer on HBO’s hit TV show Westworld, but he appears to be expanding his relationship with the company. Recently, it was announced that HBO will be the home of Abrams’ newest television show, a sci-fi epic titled Demimonde.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, HBO won a bidding war with Apple for the rights to distribute Abrams’ new project, Demimonde. The show received a straight-to-series order and looks to join the networks already impressive roster of dramas. Details regarding the show are scarce, but THR’s description of the show sounds intense:

"“a family — consisting of a mother who works as a scientist, her husband and their young daughter — who all get into a terrible car crash. After the mother winds up in a coma, her daughter begins digging through her experiments in the basement and winds up being transported to another world amid a battle against a monstrous, oppressive force. Her father then follows her into this new world”"

HBO’s move to acquire Demimonde seems to be their attempt to fill the void left after Game of Thrones ends. While it’s true that Westworld looks to be the network’s next big show, HBO is looking to build on their impressive reputation. Hopefully, Demimonde will follow in Westworld and Game of Thrones footsteps, but for now, we can’t wait for our first look at Abrams’ new project.
