A Song of Ice and Fire fans will soon have some new material to sink their teeth into. Last week, author George R.R. Martin commented that the first volume of Fire and Blood, his compendium of (fake) Targaryen history, was planned for this year, and that it “should be completed soon.” Fire and Blood is made up of excess material Martin wrote for The World of Ice & Fire: The Untold History of Westeros and the Game of Thrones, a more general-focus history. Much of that excess material has already been published in the form of stories like The Princess and the Queen and The Sons of the Dragon. Now we have some new information about Fire and Blood, courtesy of fansite Los Siete Reinos.

Per LSR’s sources, the book is the final stages, with the publisher now checking for errors and doing layout. The site also reports that Martin is the only author on the tome. That wasn’t the case with The World of Ice & Fire, which was authored with Martin’s longtime collaborators Elio M. García Jr. and Linda Antonsson, who currently curate Westeros.org. Finally, Martin’s friend and fellow author Adam Whitehead has it that the book will illustrated, as was World.

The illustrations in The World of Ice & Fire are lovely, so we should have plenty to look forward to.

As for when Fire and Blood is coming out, LSR is banking on either a summer or holiday release. Now if we could just nail down specifics for The Winds of Winter…
