Jimmi Simpson hints at William’s evolution on Westworld

We saw Jimmi Simpson’s character William begin his transformation into the Man in Black; however, they’ve only scratched the surface.

In many ways, Westworld Season 1 set the stage for what’s to come in later seasons of the show. We saw the hosts take their first steps towards sentience, but it was only the beginning. The hosts, however, are only one side of the coin. On the other side of the coin, is the Man in Black (Ed Haris)/William (Jimmi Simpson).

We saw a glimpse of William’s journey, but, again, it was only a small piece of the puzzle. Heading into Westworld Season 2, we hope to see more of both. Dolores and her hosts are headed towards enlightenment, but what of the Man in Black? According to Jimmi Simpson, we’ve only seen the beginning of William’s evolution

While promoting his new USA mini-series

Unsolved

, Jimmi Simpson had a lengthy interview with

Collider

. During the interview, the line of questioning turned toward

Westworld

Season 2. Specifically, about William’s evolution to becoming the Man in Black. They asked him if they had told all of William’s story in Season 1 or if they’ve only scratched the surface. His reply is quite telling and hints at what we could see in Season 2. His reply reads as follows:

"“I was playing it as if we’re just now scratching the surface. Once I was clear what was happening, it wasn’t to try to get to Ed [Harris], by the end of the season. It was to try to get to a believable seedling of what becomes Ed. In my mind’s eye, to help me as an actor and to get through what I needed to do, there was a certain romantic next few chapters, in which a very, very confused William tries to battle the anger that he’s feeling towards having his heart broken. So, that’s what I was playing. It was the crack into, ‘Okay, this could go two ways.’”"

At least from his perspective, Jimmi Simpson believes we’ve only seen a small part of William’s evolution. We sort of expected this, but this is still great news. William was a fan-favorite of Westworld Season 1 and we can’t wait to see more of him in the show’s upcoming second season.
