Game of Thrones Tarot Cards go on sale next week—Here’s what to expect

On Game of Thrones, prophecies are dangerous, precarious things. When a witch told a young Cersei Lannister that her children would die, it messed her up for life. Bran can peer into the future, but he sure didn’t see Hodor’s tragic death coming. And Melisandre was so sure Stannis was destined to lead the living in a fight against the darkness that she burned a little girl alive.

Wouldn’t it be nice to dabble with divination under more sedate circumstances? Enter the Game of Thrones Tarot Deck and Guidebook, from Chronicle Books:

“Archetypes are the foundation of every great tale,” said guidebook author Liz Dean, explaining why Game of Thrones is such a good fit for tarot, “and Game of Thrones is an outstanding story, a rich weave…From the icy landscapes beyond the Wall to the hot deserts of Dorne, the world of Game of Thrones is replete with symbolism: an abundant source for a new tarot deck.”

The guidebook is a good read all by itself. It features explanations for all of the cards, detailing both why which character was chosen for which card and what they mean when drawn, and suggested ways to lay them out for a reading, including layouts inspired by the Old Gods of the North, the Faith of the Seven, Tyrion’s drinking problem and more.

But the real star are the cards themselves, which are lovingly illustrated by artist Craig Coss. Even if you’re not into tarot, you can appreciate the artwork, and contemplate the meaning behind the pairings. Take a gander at some of the cards below:

Ramsay Bolton is the devil? But why?
