Westworld Season 2 title opens doors to new questions

Westworld Season 2 title only opens another box full of riddles. What could the title of season 2 mean?

Remember when fans went crazy over “The Maze” in Westworld Season 1? Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy said that was the entire focus and title of season 1. FIinally they have revealed the Westworld Season 2 title: “The Door”. The second season hasn’t even started, and the showrunners already have us asking questions and solving riddles. So what could this new title mean? In a recent interview with EW, the showrunners discussed their overall goals of each season:

"“If the first season was a journey inward, this is a journey outward,” Nolan said. “This is a search for what is else is beyond the park, and what else is in the park. Are there more parks? How big is the park? What’s beyond the park? We think of our seasons as discrete components in the series, to the point where we’ve named our seasons. The first season was called ‘The Maze.’ The second season is called ‘The Door.’”"

We know that each episode had a title in season 1, but we never knew that the showrunners gave titles to each season. Since season 1 was called “The Maze”, that title made sense. The maze became a symbol of the hosts and humans that went through some sort of awakening: Dolores and Maeve became sentient and young William found his true self. But what could “The Door” represent? To understand this new focus, we can only look back at some of the scenes in season 1.

portal into Bernard’s reality (or a reality that was manufactured). Either way, the scene made us question our own reality. If we believe what we see and do, does it matter if it’s created by someone else?

Another important door during season 1 was when young William first enters the park. However, his conversation with the Delos welcoming host, Angela (Talulah Riley), returns to the idea of reality. Her response to William’s awkwardness about having sex sums up the first season of the show: “If you can’t tell, does it matter?” Therefore, this becomes young William’s starting point as he chooses the white hat before he enters the park.

Once William finished putting on his costume, he opened the door into the park. In an instant, we are transported from the contemporary look and feel of a corporation to a dusty and rickety train on its way to Westworld. Again, the door becomes a portal. A way to transport us within seconds to someplace new. Another way to look at how the Westworld Season 2 title comes into play.

What Do Doors Have To Do In Season 2?

Now that we know the importance of use of doors during season 1, what is their importance in season 2?However, one of the biggest hints was from the recent trailers. There have already been scenes and images showing other areas such as Shogun World.Finally, after so much speculation, we see Maeve (Thandie Newton) wearing an Asian outfit in the newest trailer.

Futhermore, the Door idea could be about the other lands available to guests. Also it may represent how the hosts are actually becoming more human. In an interview at SXSW 2018, Evan Rachel Wood talked about Dolores, even though she will be causing all sorts of mayhem, is coming from a place of true humanity. It sounds like the showrunners are going to delve into what it means to be human. Their choice for the Westworld Season 2 title makes sense.
