Joe Dempsie (Gendry) hints at new character meetings in Game of Thrones season 8

Joe Dempsie (Gendry) has been making the rounds lately to promote his new show, Deep State, and has had quite a few things to say about Game of Thrones while he’s at it. Speaking to Metro, Dempsie talked about a possible future for Gendry. As the bastard son of King Robert Baratheon, Gendry could theoretically be legitimized and rule in his own right. What would that be like? “I really like the idea of it going straight to his head if he became a kind of leader. Turning up in Dalmatian fur and stuff straight away.”

So Gendry would be Cruella de Vil if he were king. Not what we were expecting but we can work with it.

Moving on, Dempsie said he’s “increasingly pleased” with how Gendry’s journey has progressed. That’s something he can perhaps only appreciate now, after coming back to the show after spending three years endlessly rowing around the Narrow Sea.

"When I left the show for a bit after season three, I do think I started to take the show slightly for granted; knowing for July and December I was going to be back on Thrones seeing all my old mates and have a bit of work. it almost got to the point where I would define the success, or otherwise, of my year by what else I’d done work-wise outside Game Of Thrones. I’d almost forget that I’d done it."

But Dempsie returned to Game of Thrones in season 7, just in time for the show’s last hurrah. He sounded excited and thankful to be a part of season 8:

"We’re filming [the final season] now. It’s been a fairly long process. We started in October and we’re potentially not going to be done till summer. The excitement is palpable on set, so just to be involved in something you know is going to cause such a stir – I can only imagine the hysteria there’s going to be by the time the show comes out next year. It’s going to have been such a long wait for everybody and to be a part of it is incredible."

If you’re looking for a way to pass the time, we have a recommendation.

While we don’t know if Dempsie has been filming season 8 since the beginning, it’s interesting that he mention the October start date. Dempsie has teased a bigger role for Gendry going forward, and if he’s truly been on set that long, we believe it.

Even more interesting is that Dempsie said that he “really appreciated” working with Kit Harington (Jon Snow), Alfie Allen (Theon Greyjoy) and Gwendoline Christie (Brienne of Tarth). Dempsie worked with Harington in season 7, but has yet to share the screen with either Allen or Christie. Is he just speaking generally about working on the same show as these actors, or are Gendry, Brienne, and Theon going to cross paths in season 8? Guess we’ll have to see. If only we’d gotten Gendry off that boat a few seasons ago…
