The people behind the marketing for Game of Thrones have a history of getting creative — they’ve frozen fountains in public squares, for instance, and created an elaborate tapestry woven with scenes from every episode of the show. Now, marketers are getting equally creative when spreading the word about Westworld, HBO’s hit show about super-intelligent robots (or “hosts”) run amuck. Case in point: to promote the second season, the people at Engineered Arts constructed their own host — name of Fred — and installed it in a London pub, and then watched as human beings interact with it.
It’s hilarious, and kind of creepy. Watch below:
“He was, like, very engaging and really wanted me to watch Westworld.” Imagine that.
The freakiest part is when Fred breaks the glass. What’s he capable of? Also, what’s the Game of Thrones equivalent of this stunt? Sending a cellist dressed in medieval garb to play “The Rains of Castamere” at someone’s wedding?
Fred was built by Will Jackson and his team, took 12 weeks to complete, and was based on a real live human being named Ted. Here’s how he was put together:
“King of creepy” may have an understatement.
Anyway, Fred has nothing on the hosts in Westworld; last we saw them, host Doloros Abernathy was leading them in a rebellion against their human masters. That story continues when the premiere of Westworld season 2 airs on HBO this Sunday, April 22 at 8:00 p.m. CST.
Next: Westworld to have a new intro for season 2?
