Boston University students wrote their own version of Game of Thrones season 8…for college credit

A lot of people are fans of Game of Thrones. Sometimes they make funny videos, or graphs, or they put together classes all about writing fantasy versions of season 8 and then read them aloud. These are there stories.

Let’s start with some videos. YouTuber steve has gained a nice little following thanks to a series of videos where he, someone who had never before seen Game of Thrones, watched episodes of the show completely out of order and out of context, trying to make sense of them. This far into the experiment, you can’t really call him a Thrones neophyte anymore, but his impressions are still funny, particularly when they’re on episodes as major as “The Lion and the Rose”:

Next, a different kind of Game of Thrones parody video: Famalam, a British sketch show on BBC Three, put together a Game of Thrones-themed homage to Nollywood, which is a nickname for the Nigerian film industry, which isn’t something I realized even had a nickname. Watch, learn, and laugh:

“White Walkers.”

Okay, this next one is…why don’t you just tell me what this is? This past winter, Boston University offered a class called “Game of Thrones: The Virtual Final Season.” In it, film and television students wrote their own versions of the final six episodes of the show…and they’re going to read through them all today starting at 11:00 a.m. at 700 Beacon Street in Boston. (Episodes 1-4 today, Episodes 5 and 6 tomorrow.) And they’re streaming the whole thing on BUTV10. You can find out more here.

So is this a great to explore the process of writing a show, or an excuse to get college credit for writing fan-fiction? Either way: fun.

Finally, here are a couple of graphs and charts for your consideration, one entertaining and one depressing. First: how often has the word “fuck” crossed the lips of a Game of Thrones character? Redditor ddIuTTuIbb put together a handy chart:

"[NO SPOILERS] Number of times they say FUCK in GoT from gameofthrones"

Characters dropped the f-bomb most often during “Oathkeeper,” from season 4, and “No One,” from season 6. By way of explanation, “Oathkeeper” features Karl Tanner and his fellow Night’s Watch mutineers cursing up a storm, and “No One” has a lot of scenes with the Hound, who may have the filthiest mouth on the show.

Next, something sobering: hot on the heels of the news that The Winds of Winter will not be coming out in 2018, Redditor SeldonCrises put together a regression analysis to predict when the final two books in the series may be released. Gaze upon it and weep:

"[NO SPOILERS] Expected publication date of the final two books of the "A Song of Ice and Fire" series from gameofthrones"

This isn’t necessarily accurate, of course, but if you want something to wake up screaming about in the middle of the night, it’ll do.

And now, to cheer you back up, here’s a picture of Emilia Clarke and a couple of buddies singing their lungs out on a karaoke version of “Total Eclipse of the Heart.” Would that there were audio.

Happy weekend!
