“Hey, they were in Game of Thrones”—Where else have you seen these 55 GoT cast members? (Part 2)
15) JOSEF ALTIN
As a member of the same Night’s Watch class as Jon Snow, Pypar “Pip” was one of a group of ne’er do wells who matured into capable and loyal veterans. English actor Josef Atlin‘s sympathetic portrayal of Pip fleshed out his character in ways that belied his slight screen time, and it hurt us when he died defending Castle Black. Altin talked about his time on the show to HittheFloor Magazine:
"I really like playing the light-hearted one out of the Night’s Watch. It breaks the tension up when everything is gloomy and moody at Castle Black. But Pyp only is like that because he’s scared and tries to cover it up by being the joker out of the pack. Yes, I love being involved in the action and swinging a sword. Never got to do that until I got the part in Game of Thrones."
Atlin has been working since 1999. You can see him in a lot of TV shows, including Blackpool (2004), Robin Hood (2006), The Bill (2004-2009, starring many fellow Thrones actors), Casualty (2006-2009), Him & Her (2011-2012) Peaky Blinders (2016) and Harlots (2017).
As for the role of Pyp, Altin never really had to audition…well, not exactly. “
I got the part as Pyp through another audition. The day I had the audition the directors, producers and the casting director were in the room. I had a few lines to say and that was it. I think I went back for a recall and that was all. Heard I got the part a few weeks later.”
The busy Atlin’s movie credits include Stoned (2005), Eastern Promises (2007), The Young Victoria (2009) Les Miserables (2012) Vendetta (2013, top above) and Child 44 (2015, above).
Atlin’s talents have kept him in good stead career-wise. You can see him in both the TV series The Alienist and the feature film Tomb Raider in 2018.
