24) MARK STANLEY

We all grew to love Grenn, one of Jon’s Snow’s group of misfits, during his time with the Night’s Watch. Yorkshire-born actor Mark Stanley played the friendly, simple Grenn, a minor character who broke our hearts when he died bravely defending the inner gate during the Battle of Castle Black (“The Watchers on the Wall,” S4/Ep9).

In an interview with Fabric magazine, Stanley talks about how his first day on the Thrones set completely awed him:

"I will never forget that first morning… Walking on to a set like that you are totally enamoured by how grand it is, and the amount of money that has been spent. It gives you a great perspective. You suddenly realise that it is not all for you, and that you are there for it. You are just a small part of this huge machine of a show."

Stanley’s TV work took off after his appearance on Game of Thrones (2011-2014). He scored roles on Air Aces (2012), Dickensian (2015-2016), The Collection (2016), Broken (2017, with Thrones veteran Sean Bean), Loves, Lies and Records (2017) and Little Women (2017).

The same superpowering can be said for his film roles. They start in 2013 with How I Live Now and continue with Coriolanus Live (2014, below, with Tom Hiddleston), Kilo Two Bravo (2014), Mr. Turner (2014), Star Wars: The Force Awakens (2015) and Dark River (2017, above, also starring with Sean Bean, again!).

“This is a vocation at the end of the day,” Stanley says about acting in an interview with The Jackal.  “Sometimes it’s like decoding a cryptic crossword, like you’re actually blueprinting someone’s psychology. I love all that.”
