40) TOBIAS MENZIES

Edmure Tully may be little more than a dull-eyed, ineffective pawn in the game of thrones, but London-born actor Tobias Menzies makes the character memorable. Menzies has made quite a few big splashes lately, but as he told Vulture before Edmure’s return in season 6, he very much enjoys his time in Westeros:

"I know David [Benioff] and Dan [Weiss] are very fond of the character, and they may drag him back at some point, so I wouldn’t be surprised if he came back in some capacity. And it would be fun to go back and reprise Edmure. He was a little bit different from the other characters. A little buffoonish. He was fun. I enjoyed my time with them."

Of course, Menzies is very familiar to fans of Rome (2005-2007) and Outlander (2014-2017, above). He’s done plenty of other TV work besides, including roles in Midsomer Murders (2000), Casualty (1998-2000), Foyle’s War (2002), Kingdom (2009), MI-5 (2009), The Deep (2010), Black Mirror (2013) and Doctor Who (2013).

Menzies’ movie CV sports titles like The Low Down (2000), Casino Royale (2006), Atonement (2007), Forget Me Not (2010), Hysteria (2011), Black Sea (2014) and Underworld: Blood Wars (2016).

What’s next for Menzies? He tells Andy Warhol’s Interview that he doesn’t mind going playing nasty characters.

"I really enjoy the darker side of things. It’s the type of work that I like to watch. I know some actors do—[they feel] fearful of how they’ll be viewed. But invariably, I find dark material can be very, very rewarding to inhabit and investigate. That’s never really been a concern of mine."

Menzies is everywhere in 2018, including TV roles in The Crown, The Terror (above, with Thrones alums Ciaran Hinds and Clive Russell), King Lear and the feature film Carmilla.
