55) TOM HOPPER

Dickon Tarly was a born warrior, a son loyal to his father Randyll even to the bitter, fiery end. English actor Tom Hopper took on the role of Dickon after actor Freddie Stroma, who played him in season 6, dropped out. Hopper’s blend of earnestness and well-muscled battlefield prowess earned his character the respect of fans.

In an interview with Elle, Hopper talks about the endless jokes associated with his character’s name:

"Ever since I first got introduced on the show, it’s been this onslaught of people ripping me for this name, Dickon. I think that’s the thing with Game of Thrones, it comes with such a ridiculously big following, it’s hard not to have some kind of fan reaction, I suppose, when you’re on it."

Hopper’s TV roles include parts in Casualty (2007), Kingdom (2008), Doctors (2009), Doctor Who (2010), Good Cop (2012), Merlin (2010-2012) and Black Sails (2014-2017, above). His movie work includes appearances in Saxon (2007), Tormented (2009, below), Knights of Badassdom (2013, with Thrones costar Peter Dinklage), Northmen – A Viking Saga (2014) and Kill Ratio (2016).

Sticking with the Elle interview, Hopper goes on to talk about shooting his final scene, where Daenerys has Drogon barbecue him, his dad and a slew of unfortunate soldiers:

"What’s brilliant about Game of Thrones is they have amazing extras. They’re so committed, and these guys in particular were great. Their fear of the dragons and their fear of kneeling down and me not kneeling down created a really good scene. When we actually shot the thing with a dragon, we had a big green ball where the dragon was supposed to be and everything. We were told to imagine that we were facing a firing squad, and I thought the way it turned out was brilliant … It’s a pretty cool way to go (being roasted by Drogon). When I read that, I thought, I’ll take that. I’ll take that all day long."

Hopper is appearing in the feature I Feel Pretty in 2018 and the TV series The Umbrella Academy in 2019.
