“Hey, they were in Game of Thrones”—Where else have you seen these 55 GoT cast members? (Part 2)
7) INDIRA VARMA
As the leader of the Sand Snakes, Ellaria Sand was a potentially great Game of Thrones character that got mired in the underperforming Dornish storyline. Veteran actress Indira Varma certainly had the chops to do great things with Ellaria, but we only got a glimpse of her range in moments like her dramatic final scene in “The Queen’s Justice” in season 7. In an interview with Cosmopolitan, Varma talked about how she got stuck in her shackles:
"They very kindly put some felt inside the handcuffs so we didn’t get bruised and battered — though we ended up doing that anyway because your acting takes over. The shackles kept coming off so they had to tighten them and then we couldn’t get them off at all. At the end of the day I was like, ‘I’m stuck! I need somebody to help me!’ and they had to cut me out of them. All in a day’s work."
Born in England to an East Indian mother and a Swiss father, Varma burst onto the movie scene in the steamy Karma Sutra: A Tale of Love (1996, above) and followed it up with tons of film credits that include Clancy’s Kitchen (1997), Bride and Prejudice (2004), Basic Instinct 2 (2006) and Exodus: Gods and Kings (2014).
If Varma has been prolific on the big screen, she’s been even busier on TV. Her CV includes shows like HBO’s Rome (2005-2007, above, with Thrones costars Ciaran Hinds and Tobias Menzies), Luther (2010), Human Target (2010-2012), Silk (2012) and Paranoid (2016).
What’s up next for Varma? Look for her in the TV miniseries Patrick Melrose this year, and the miniseries Carnival Row in 2019.
