9) CLIVE RUSSELL

Ah, how we miss the irascible and defiant Bryden ‘Blackfish’ Tully, played with relish by veteran actor Clive Russell. Born in England but raised in Scotland, Russell started out as a teacher but has been working in TV and film since 1960.

Despite his plentiful resume, Russell mentioned on an installment of Celebrity Antiques Road Trip that nobody knew who he was when he was first cast as the Blackfish on Game of Thrones. “That is a complete one-off in my life. I’ve never been involved in anything with that visibility … When I was chosen, the blogs were like ‘who? Who is this?'”

Russell’s movie credits feature movies big and small, including The Thirteenth Warrior (1999), Sherlock Holmes (2009), The Wolfman (2010), Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows (2011), Thor: The Dark World (2013) and The Young Messiah (2013, above, with Thrones veteran Sean Bean)

Other than Thrones, Russell’s best known TV show roles include Chief Inspector Abberline in Ripper Street (2012-2016, below with Thrones costar Jerome Flynn) and Angus O’Connor in Happiness (2001-2003). But he’s been on tons of other programs, including Zorro (1990), Middlemarch (1994), The Mists of Avalon (2001), Coronation Street (1983-2006), The Bill (1993-2009), Outlander (2016), Casualty (1990-2018) and the miniseries Rellik (2017, with Thrones costar Richard Dormer).

What’s up next for the busy Russell? You can catch him alongside Tom Berenger, Beau Bridges and Louis Gossett Jr. in the Irish comedy Supervised in 2018, plus he’s appearing alongside his Thrones co-workers Ciaran Hinds and Tobias Menzies in The Terror TV series.
