Solo: A Star Wars Story on track for record-breaking opening weekend
Disney is already riding the smash box office success of Avengers: Infinity War, but it’s already preparing to for another super-blockbuster. Solo: A Star Wars Story, which stars Game of Thrones’ own Emilia Clarke in a lead role, hits theaters on May 25. According to Variety, the film is on track to take in $170 million domestic box office during its four-day Memorial Day opening weekend.
For reference, Infinity War has already had the biggest weekend opening of all time, with $250 million already in the bank from North America alone ($630 million worldwide). But Solo could have the biggest Memorial Day weekend ever. The previous total is held by Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End with $139.8 million. It’ll look pretty good aside its Star Wars brethren, too.
Disney has already made an insane amount of money from Star Wars, making the $4.06 billion it spent to acquire the rights a wise investment. Solo will only balloon that number further.
Solo: A Star Wars Story will tell the origin story of Han Solo, including how he met Chewbacca and how he won the Millennium Falcon from Lando Calrissian. The all-star cast includes Alden Ehrenreich as in the lead role of Han, Donald Glover as Lando Calrissian, Joonas Suotamo as Chewbacca, Woody Harrelson as Tobias Beckett, Westworld star Thandie Newton as Val, and Clarke as Qi’ra, a childhood friend of Han’s. The fact that Qi’ra’s not around in the later movies doesn’t have us hopeful about her chances to survive the movie, but Daenerys has lived for a long time on a show famous for killing characters, so maybe this is Hollywood’s way of balancing the scales.
