Watch the trailer for “Riddle of the Sphinx,” the fourth episode of Westworld season 2

Like Game of Thrones, Westworld is packed with subplots, so not every character shows up in every episode. This week, we saw nothing of the enigmatic Man in Black (Ed Harris) or his traveling companion, but according to the trailer for next week’s outing — “Riddle of the Sphinx” — they’ll be back in a big way. Watch the teaser below:

“There’s something here,” Bernard says at the top, “something they’ve been working on for a long time.” People on this show sure do enjoy speaking cryptically, don’t they?

More seriously, Bernard is probably referring to whatever it is Delos is doing with the guests DNA; as we learned in the season premiere, the company has been collecting it for years, probably since the place opened. Delos has also been recording what despicable things the guests do in Westworld, probably as part of a blackmail scheme. Any good business has multiple revenue streams, after all.

The MIB also gets in on the vague proclamations. “I know where you’re going,” he says. “You call it glory, but it’s got a lot of names, and I know the way. You haven’t known a true thing in all your life. Death is always true.” Roger that.

Given all of this ominous foretelling, it’s appropriate that the episode title is “Riddle of the Sphinx,” the sphinx being one of mythology’s most famous masters of trivia. Also, the sphinx is said to kill those who can’t answer her riddle correctly. Will anyone fail to answer next week?

We’re also looking forward to seeing more of parks beyond Westworld. We were introduced to two in tonight’s episode, “Virtù e Fortuna”: one modeled off colonial India and the long-teased Shogun World. That is a happening island, historically speaking.
