Westworld season 2, episode 3 recap of Virtù e Fortuna – Part 2 of 3. The hosts continue their takeover to reign supreme over the park.
Before we begin I’d like to share this behind the scenes video from HBO’s Westworld You Tube account. Click here to see Executive Producers Lisa Joy and Jonathan Nolan take you behind the scenes on the making of Fort Forlorn Hope, crafting Dolores as a character, and dealing with topics that women face when oppressed.
Episode 3 was as action-packed as we wanted it to be. The hosts are gaining the upper ground. Will Virtue and Fortune be with them? Let’s find out!

Maeve, Hector and Lee (who now looks less dick-ish in his new farm boy duds) continue their trek to find the park sector where Maeve’s daughter lives. Thanks to Westworld employee of the month Felix, she has the coordinates. Lee continues to protest and use his brand of rationalization in order to avoid the chaos going on. Maeve isn’t phased. Nor is Hector, who offers Lee some liquid courage.
As they cross a small river they encounter a few Natives. Maeve has a flashback to when they tried kill her and her daughter inside their home. Normally this would cause a flight or fight response, but my hero Maeve does neither. She is fearless, but not foolishly so.
Hector, who speaks their language, attempt to reason with them. They say Hector and Maeve are free to go but they want Lee. Maeve tells them to stop, as this usually works on other hosts, but they don’t! Lee starts to run away and Maeve heads off after him. Hector shoots at the water twice and asks them to stop but again, they won’t. They really want Lee.
They reach one of the elevators that goes to the park’s sub levels and begin to descend. Hector, who we all know is a crack shot, fires at the lead Native and misses. Does he really miss or are they not susceptible to Hector’s host gun? The Natives are stunned by this contraption. Or are they? Underneath war paint, it’s hard to tell. But I swear the Native leading the charge looks VERY familiar to me and almost looked disappointed he couldn’t go with them.
While lost underground, Maeve and Hector have a ‘moment’. Lee can’t understand why since they weren’t programmed this way. Lee says Hector’s only programmed to love Isabella. Hector says he realized Isabella wasn’t real, but what he feels for Maeve is. This declaration of love causes a genuine emotional reaction from Lee.
As Hector begins to tell Maeve she is his light, Lee mimics the words verbatim. He wrote these lines for Hector. Maeve asks Lee if he had an Isabella. Lee admits he did but she left him. As most authors, Lee wrote himself into the narrative and created an idealized version of his personal self and story. Lee has a… heart?
I have to admit the next scene made me squeal a little. My second favorite female character in Westworld, Armistice, literally comes blazing onto the screen holding a flamethrower. Hector smiles and says she has a dragon. Thank you writers for that brief moment of levity! Armistice also has a brand new mechanical forearm and hand. As Logan once said: Oh, upgrade!
Armistice leads the trio into a different room where we once again see Felix and Sylvester. Did anyone else draw the parallel between their names and famous cartoon cats? Maeve sets Felix free and seems happy to see him. Sylvester is being treated appropriately by Armistice who has put a grenade on him. Sorry buddy.
The first thing that pops in my head is the song ‘Papa can you hear me?’ from the movie Yentl. We last saw Bernard and Peter being left to their own devices after Charlotte abandons them to the Confederados. Thanks a lot Charlotte. When we see them again at Fort Forlorn Hope we’re relieved, even though they’re quite literally in a bind again.
Dolores recognizes Peter (daddy!) and says she needs to talk to him. After a minor skirmish,Teddy steps in and helps Peter up and into a room. Dolores spots Bernard and spares him too. Teddy doesn’t remember Peter is Dolores’ father so she refreshes his memory and add they’re all she has left now.
I love how Westworld can go from murder and mayhem to empathy and romance in 7 seconds. Dolores goes to comfort her father and he’s once again quoting Shakespeare. These particular lines are from King Lear. The scene mirrors the dialogue between Lear and Cordelia, who kneels next to him as he’s loosing his mind.
Then suddenly, Peter recognizes Dolores and comes to life. He reverts back to the rancher he was and speaks to her as if they’re back on the season 1, episode 1 porch in the morning before she sets off to run errands and paint. She tells him she broke free with the pull of a trigger but it started a war. She asks him if he understands but he doesn’t and begins to glitch out again. “I have to get to the train.” Hmmm. Which train? The one going in or out of the park?
Later on, Dolores asks Bernard if he knows the man who he is based on. She wonders if there is any part of him left in Bernard. Bernard says he was created to serve. Dolores brings Bernard to her father and says they’ve broken him. She asks Bernard to fix him. He asks why she wants to dominate the world inside the park. She says her eye is on the world outside and thinks he hasn’t seen it. As we saw in episode 1, we know this not to be true. Bernard discovered an massively encrypted code inside Peter. This is what Charlotte is after.
