A Song of Dan and Josh: Tyrion VI and Eddard XI

Welcome to another episode of A Song of Dan and Josh, the show where Josh Hill — a Game of Thrones fan who has never read the books — and myself — a Game of Thrones fan who’s read the books multiple times — talk through George R.R. Martin’s monolithic fantasy series chapter by chapter, analyzing, criticizing and educating as we go.

The podcast version ofTake the Black Live is now on iTunes! Please subscribe and download from there if you can. Also, you can help us out by giving us a five-star rating and leaving a friendly comment! We’re also on Blog Talk Radio.

Or that’s the high-minded way to say “a couple of nerds talk about books for upwards of half an hour,” anyway. This week, we take a look at ‘Tyrion VI’ and ‘Eddard XI’ from Game of Thrones, the first book in Martin’s saga. Join us, won’t you?

Topics include:

  • This is the first chapter where we get an up-close look at Tyrion and Bronn’s relationship. What are these two to each other, and why are they such a good fit?
  • Did Josh just compare Bronn to Han Solo?
  • Tyrion tells the story of Tysha, his first wife. It’s a brutal tale. What does it add to the overall story and what does it tell us about who Tyrion is as a person?
  • ‘Eddard XI’ is the one and only chapter where Ned Stark gets to sit on the Iron Throne. Martin pays a lot of attention to the Iron Throne here. Why is it so significant to the series, narratively and symbolically?
  • While Robert’s away, Ned has to make an important decision about how to handle the Mountain attacking villages in the Riverlands. Does he make the right call?

A Song of Dan and Josh airs with Take the Black Live every Wednesday at 4:00 p.m. CST on our Facebook page. Hope to see you there! Next week, we’ll take on Sansa III and Eddard XII.
