After an intense, action-packed hour of Westworld, the next episode of the show will take us… huh. Best just watch the trailer:
This is an interesting choice for an episode this close to the end of the season. Instead of continuing the stories of Maeve, Dolores, Bernard and the rest, Westworld is throwing us a curve ball and telling what looks to be the origin story of one of the members of the Ghost Nation tribe. Again I say: huh.
We have been missing that perspective. Up until now, the members of the Ghost Nation have seemed like brutal savages. They could do with some humanization…but is “humanization” even the right word when you’re talking about robots? I never know the right terms to use when talking about this show.
And unlike Game of Thrones, which has consistent forward momentum, Westworld has always been willing to include flashbacks, asides, and other format changes, the shifts between timelines being the most obvious example. A standalone episode about a member of the Ghost Nation actually isn’t too off-brand. It looks lushly photographed, at minimum. Hopefully the story can match the visuals.
The title of the episode — “Kitsuya” — translates to “remember” in the Lakota language of the Ghost Nation. Kudos for HBO for the second episode of Westworld this year to make heavy use of a non-English language.
