Hundreds of extras shoot an action scene on the fire-ravaged King’s Landing set

Last week, the ever-vigilant A Red Priestess brought us exciting video direct from the enormous King’s Landing set in Belfast. After months spent watching the crew build the place up, we’re now watching them set it on fire.

We have more video today, and more information about what’s going on in this scene. Scroll below the video of King’s Landing ablaze for more.

The thing that stands out the most from these new videos is how much of the city is on fire. When we last checked in, the damage blaze was mostly concentrated on a dome modeled off St. Blaise’s Church in Dubrovnik. And indeed, that guy is still in bad shape:

But now, the buildings around it have also gone up in smoke, whether that smoke heavy and black, as above, or thick and white, as below:

Here’s a picture of the front gate, which has also gone through it:

So King’s Landing will take a major beating in season 8, probably from dragons — what else could cause that kind of devastation?

According to Los Siete Reinos, shooting on this particular action scene started 10 days ago and is scheduled to run through the early days of July. When put alongside the the epic Winterfell shoot from earlier in the year, and it’s clear season 8 is going to bring us some spectacular sequences.

LSR also has information on the extras involved. Over 600 of them will take part in the sequence, and they will be made up of all kinds of people, not just soldiers from one army or another but also women and people of different races. We’re probably looking at the citizenry of King’s Landing here, and they are not in for a good time. It makes me think of the casting call HBO put out a few months back for a young mother and her daughter, who are in a “survival situation.” I’d say dragons attacking your home qualifies.

One other question I have: if HBO plans to turn this set into a tourist attraction after filming is over, is it a good idea to destroy it? Well, it looks like they’re making plans to put it back together when things have quieted down:

Long live that dome.
