If you followed AMC’s Gothic horror series The Terror here on WiC (and loved it, like we did), we have some great news! AMC has announced a second season!

Now, if you watched The Terror’s first season, which was based on Dan Simmons’ historical fiction novel about the lost Franklin Expedition, you know it ended with nearly all of the principal characters dead and the survivor living in self-imposed exile. How do you have a second season of that? Answer: The Terror is an anthology series, meaning the next installment will be a completely new story, but one that has a similar tone and/or in the same genre. It will be set during World War II and will focus on a ghost/creature/monster that haunts members of a Japanese-American community, whether they’re fighting in the Pacific or confined to internment camps.

The new season is co-created and executive produced by Alexander Woo (True Blood) and Max Borenstein (Kong: Skull Island, Godzilla). “I’m deeply honored to be telling a story set in this extraordinary period,” said Woo. “We hope to convey the abject terror of the historical experience in a way that feels modern and relevant to the present moment. And the prospect of doing so with a majority Asian and Asian-American cast is both thrilling and humbling.”

Borenstein (who wrote a script for one of the Game of Thrones prequel series, by the way, although if he’s doing this we doubt it’s going to get picked up) also gave his thoughts on this hot-button choice:

"As a history-buff and genre geek (not to mention a conscious American today), it’s clear that truth is always scarier than fiction. This season of The Terror uses as its setting one of the darkest, most horrific moments in our nation’s history. The Japanese-American internment is a blemish on the nation’s conscience — and one with dire resonance to current events. I’m thrilled that AMC is giving us the chance to use that darkness as the inspiration for what I hope will be a trenchant, terrifying season of TV."

If the second season of The Terror is written with as much care as the first, this could be another home run for the network.

Like season 1, The Terror season 2 is an AMC Studios Production, with Alien and Gladiator director Ridley Scott once again serving as an executive producer. AMC is looking to premiere the new episodes sometime in 2019, although we’re not sure when. We don’t know who will be in the cast either, although it’s probably too much to hope that we’ll see Game of Thrones veterans spotlighted again. Either way, we can hardly wait!
