6. Sunfyre

Sunfyre the Golden, Aegon II’s dragon, may have been the most beautiful dragon ever to fly the skies above Westeros, or maybe even the planet as a whole.

Sunfyre is another dragon from the Dance of the Dragons. I put him here mostly for what happened after the dragon Vhagar saved him from an attack by Meleys, the dragon ridden by Princess Rhaenys Targaryen. Gravely wounded from that encounter, Sunfyre was still able to kill three score score human attackers, Walys Mooton’s bravest, and the wild dragon Grey Ghost. Later, still wounded, Sunfyre also killed the dragon Moondancer. Later still, Aegon II had Sunfyre kill Rhaenyra Targaryen, the leader of the Blacks, one of the sides of the Targaryen civil war.

When considering the Dance of the Dragons, the Greens are generally considered to be “the bad guys,” so that doesn’t diminish what Sunfyre was able to do. He survived many fights and killed many foes. Had he lived longer, he may have become much stronger still, but it was not to be. Wounded so badly he could no longer fly, Sunfyre refused to eat and eventually died. There might have been foul play there, but that’s a story for another day.
