3. Vhagar

Vhagar is best known as the dragon ridden by Visenya Targaryen, one of Aegon the Conqueror’s sisters. Later, years after Visenya died, Laena Velaryon and Aemond Targaryen rode her during the Dance of the Dragons.

Vhagar was the largest dragon who participated in that war. She would probably have been on the side of the Blacks had Laena not died from complications from childbirth before the war started, and would not have killed Laena’s widower Prince Daemon Targaryen and his dragon.

Before that, Vhagar killed both Meleys and Sunfyre, but her greatest feat took place much earlier. Vhagar excelled not so much in killing other dragons, but in destroying ships, killing men and attacking castles without getting herself killed, as Meraxes did. She destroyed the Arryn fleet, which had defeated the Targaryen fleet, took part in the field of fire, avenged Rhaenys and Meraxes during the first Dornish War and played a major role in quelling the Faith Militant uprising during the reign of Maegor the Cruel. Vhagar is also the dragon who took the Eyrie — without force — and would have destroyed the Starry Sept if Visenya had gotten her way.
