Emmys 2018: Game of Thrones leads with 22 nominations!

facebooktwitterreddit

Yesterday, we told you about everything Game of Thrones had submitted for consideration in this year’s Emmys. Today, the nominations were officially unveiled, and after a year away from the awards show, Game of Thrones came roaring back with 22 nominations, more than any other program! What does it stand to win? Read on below.

Outstanding Production Design For A Narrative Period Or Fantasy Program (One Hour Or More)

  • The Alienist, “The Boy On The Bridge”
  • The Crown, “Beryl”
  • Game Of Thrones, “Dragonstone”
  • The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, “Ya Shivu v Bolshom Dome Na Kholme”
  • Westworld, “Akane No Mai”

The show has taken this award for the past two seasons and should again.

Outstanding Casting For A Drama Series

  • The Crown
  • Game of Thrones
  • Stranger Things
  • The Handmaid’s Tale
  • Westworld

Game of Thrones has been up for this award plenty of times, but only won once, for season 5.

Outstanding Fantasy/Sci-Fi Costumes

  • Fahrenheit 451
  • Game of Thrones
  • The Handmaid’s Tale
  • A Series Of Unfortunate Events
  • Westworld

Outstanding Directing For A Drama Series

  • The Crown, “Paterfamilias”
  • Game Of Thrones, “Beyond The Wall”
  • Game Of Thrones, “The Dragon And The Wolf”
  • The Handmaid’s Tale, “After”
  • Ozark, “The Toll”
  • Ozark, “Tonight We Improvise”
  • Stranger Things, “Chapter Nine: The Gate”

I’m not surprised Game of Thrones made it into this category, but I surprised that “Beyond the Wall” got in over “The Spoils of War.” I’m pulling for a win for Jeremy Podeswa for “The Dragon and the Wolf” myself.

Outstanding Single-Camera Picture Editing For A Drama Series

  • Game Of Thrones, “Beyond The Wall”
  • Game Of Thrones, “The Dragon And The Wolf”
  • Game Of Thrones, “The Spoils Of War”
  • The Handmaid’s Tale, “June”
  • Stranger Things, “Chapter Nine: The Gate”

Over half the nominees in this category are Game of Thrones episodes. Things are looking up.

Outstanding Hairstyling For A Single-Camera Series

  • The Crown
  • Game of Thrones
  • GLOW
  • The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel
  • Westworld

Surely Daenerys’ crazy complicated wigs deserve recognition?

Outstanding Makeup For A Single-Camera Series (Non-Prosthetic)

  • Game of Thrones, “The Dragon and the Wolf”
  • GLOW, “Money’s In The Chase”
  • The Handmaid’s Tale, “Unwomen”
  • This Is Us, “Number Three”
  • Vikings, “Homeland”
  • Westworld, “Akane No Mai”

Outstanding Prosthetic Makeup For A Series, Limited Series, Movie Or Special

  • American Horror Story: Cult
  • The Assassination Of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story
  • Game of Thrones, “The Dragon and the Wolf”
  • Star Trek: Discovery, “Will You Take My Hand?”
  • Westworld, “The Riddle of the Sphinx”

Outstanding Music Composition For A Series (Original Dramatic Score)

  • Game Of Thrones, “The Dragon And The Wolf”
  • Marvel’s Jessica Jones, “AKA Playland”
  • Once Upon A Time, “Leaving Storybrooke”
  • SEAL Team, “Pattern Of Life”
  • Star Wars Rebels, “Family Reunion”
  • Westworld, “Akane No Mai”

I’m betting “The Dragon and the Wolf” is nominated for the beautiful Jon-Daenerys love theme. Either way, composer Ramin Djawadi has double the chances to win here, since he also writes the score for Westworld.

Outstanding Supporting Actor In A Drama Series

  • The Crown, Matt Smith as Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh
  • Game Of Thrones, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau as Jaime Lannister
  • Game Of Thrones, Peter Dinklage as Tyrion Lannister
  • The Handmaid’s Tale, Joseph Fiennes as Commander Waterford
  • Homeland, Mandy Patinkin as Saul Berenson
  • Stranger Things, David Harbour as Jim Hopper

Peter Dinklage has already won this award twice. I’m pulling for Coster-Waldau!

Outstanding Supporting Actress In A Drama Series

  • The Crown, Vanessa Kirby as Princess Margaret
  • Game Of Thrones, Lena Headey as Cersei Lannister
  • The Handmaid’s Tale, Alexis Bledel as Ofglen
  • The Handmaid’s Tale, Ann Dowd as Aunt Lydia
  • The Handmaid’s Tale, Yvonne Strahovski as Serena Joy
  • Stranger Things, Millie Bobby Brown as Eleven
  • Westworld, Thandie Newton as Maeve

All three Lannister siblings are on the ballot! As are a lot people from The Handmaid’s Tale. A shame Sophie Turner and Maisie Williams couldn’t break through.

Also, we have to point out that HBO put forward Emilia Clarke and Kit Harington for consideration in the Best Actress and Best Actor categories respectively. And they are…not nominated for anything! Before this year, HBO had only ever submitted actors for the Supporting categories. They took a gamble with Harington and Clarke, and it did not pay off.

Outstanding Guest Actress In A Drama Series

  • Game Of Thrones, “The Queen’s Justice,” Diana Rigg as Lady Olenna Tyrell
  • The Handmaid’s Tale, “After,” Samira Wiley as Moira
  • The Handmaid’s Tale, “Baggage,” Cherry Jones as Holly Osborne
  • The Handmaid’s Tale, “Other Women,” Kelly Jenrette as Annie
  • How To Get Away With Murder, “I’m Going Away,” Cicely Tyson as Ophelia Harkness
  • Scandal, “Allow Me To Reintroduce Myself,” Viola Davis as Annalise Keating

I’ll be shocked if Rigg doesn’t take this one for her final year on the show.

Outstanding Sound Editing For A Comedy Or Drama Series (One Hour)

  • Game Of Thrones, “The Spoils Of War”
  • Homeland, “All In”
  • Star Trek: Discovery, “What’s Past Is Prologue”
  • Stranger Things, “Chapter Eight: The Mind Flayer”
  • Westworld, “Akane No Mai”

Outstanding Sound Mixing For A Comedy Or Drama Series (One Hour)

  • Game Of Thrones, “Beyond The Wall”
  • The Handmaid’s Tale, “June”
  • Mr. Robot, “eps3.4_runtime-error.r00”
  • Stranger Things, “Chapter Eight: The Mind Flayer”
  • Westworld, “Akane No Mai”

Outstanding Special Visual Effects

  • Altered Carbon, “Out Of The Past”
  • Game of Thrones, “Beyond the Wall”
  • Lost In Space, “Danger, Will Robinson”
  • Stranger Things, “Chapter Nine: The Gate”
  • Westworld, “The Passenger”

Outstanding Stunt Coordination For A Drama Series, Limited Series Or Movie

  • The Blacklist
  • Blindspot
  • Game of Thrones
  • Marvel’s The Punisher
  • Westworld

Outstanding Writing For A Drama Series

  • The Americans, “Start”
  • The Crown, “Mystery Man”
  • Game of Thrones, “The Dragon and the Wolf”
  • The Handmaid’s Tale, “June”
  • Killing Eve, “Nice Face”
  • Stranger Things, “Chapter Nine: The Gate”

Outstanding Drama Series

  • The Americans
  • The Crown
  • Game of Thrones
  • The Handmaid’s Tale
  • Stranger Things
  • This Is Us
  • Westworld

The 70th annual Emmy Awards will air September 17 on NBC. Congratulations to all the nominees, and best of luck to the ones from Game of Thrones!
