Doctor Who: First look at Series Eleven during World Cup Final on Sunday!
By James Aggas
Tomorrow, during the World Cup Final, Doctor Who fans will finally get their first official glimpse at Jodie Whittaker’s new Doctor in Series Eleven!
We’ve been waiting for our first glimpse of Jodie Whittaker’s first series of Doctor Who for a while now. And it looks like we’re finally getting one. The BBC has revealed exactly when we can expect our first glimpse: Sunday July 15th! Just one day away!
But what time can we expect the trailer to broadcast? Currently, all we know so far is that it’ll be during the broadcast of the football World Cup Final on BBC One. This will be broadcast from 3.50pm – 6.35pm. So technically, it could be broadcast at any point during those three hours.
But the most likely point is during half-time. So between 4.45pm and 5pm, that’s where we’re most likely to see a trailer.
Why the World Cup?
More from Winter is Coming
- For All Mankind finally gives us information in Episode 405, “Goldilocks”
- Watch a stunning VFX breakdown of The Wheel of Time season 2
- Of course Steve Toussaint (Corlys Velaryon) thinks Eve Best (Rhaenys Targaryen) should rule Westeros
- Confirmed: The Last of Us season 2 will air in 2025
- Final season of Star Trek: Discovery will have “a lot of action, a lot of adventure, a lot of fun”
It’s definitely smart of the BBC to reveal it like this. Annoying, especially without the lack of a clear time of broadcast, but smart. The World Cup Final between France and Croatia was already going to be huge, especially in England. So the BBC were virtually guaranteed millions of viewers anyway, especially live.
So having the broadcast for the new trailer for Doctor Who happen during the World Cup Final ensures two things. First, it guarantees that the fans will tune into the match at some point and increase the viewing figures.
Secondly, it also ensures that many, many people who don’t watch Doctor Who religiously will also be exposed to this early glimpse of the series. So it’ll massively increase publicity, both for Doctor Who itself and for the BBC. It’s also a big reason why they revealed Jodie Whittaker’s casting during Wimbledon last year.

Major marketing
This second reason sounds like the most likely why this has been done. With a brand-new series, as well as a brand-new showrunner and of course, a brand-new Doctor, the BBC needs to promote this as much as possible.
It also needs to do this right, too. The casting of Jodie Whittaker is probably one of the biggest risks that the show has taken. At the very least, since William Hartnell was replaced by Patrick Troughton.
As a result, marketing at this stage has to be done exactly right. Not just to appeal to an established audience. It also needs to appeal to a new one, too. Let’s hope the new trailer does both of these things tomorrow.
