New Hampshire: Robert Baratheon

In his heyday, Robert Baratheon was pretty freakin’ cool. Alongside his best bud Ned Stark, he launched a rebellion that eventually overthrew the Mad King. He wielding a massive war hammer and became an icon when he took down Rhaegar Targaryen at the Trident.

When he was made king, he quickly became known for his love of the excess. Robert was married to Cersei Lannister, but their union was hollow. He preferred the company of other lovers as he drank and ate his days away.

It’s this bucking of tradition and conventional wisdom that make Robert a good fit for a state like New Hampshire. Fun fact: The Granite State was the first state to declare its independence from England. It did so a full six months before the Declaration of Independence was even signed. Sounds like Robert and New Hampshire share a taste for rebellion.

That defiant attitude continues today. The New Hampshire state motto isn’t “live free or die” for nothing. That phrase pretty much sums up Robert’s ‘tude.

But that’s not the only thing they have in common. Interestingly, the white-tailed deer is one of the most common animals found in New Hampshire. Faithful Thrones fans will remember that the Baratheon house sigil is a stag, which is just a male deer. Robert was actually nicknamed “The Stag King.” Sounds like King Robert and New Hampshire are a perfect match!
