Maine: Catelyn Stark

Maine seems like the perfect state for Catelyn Stark, as it’s suggestive of several elements of her story.

Faithful fans will remember that before Catelyn became a Stark, she was a Tully of Riverrun. Riverrun is known for being an island fortress which can be accessed only by moat when the Lord is feeling generous to outsiders. The actual keep is located inside and has, at one time, enough provisions to house soldiers for years.

Maine, meanwhile, has plenty of coastline, which means plenty of water. It’s also isolated to a degree from the rest of the nation, as it’s in the far north of the country and only borders one other state. That northern aspect connects it to Catelyn’s adulthood, when she married into the Stark family and moved to Winterfell. It gets cold and snows in the north, whether in the U.S. or Westeros.

Fun fact: Maine is home to author Stephen King, who penned such horror classic as It, The Shining, and Carrie. Game of Thrones fans know that Catelyn meets a pretty gruesome end, a nasty death that fits right into one of King’s books, to say nothing about what happens to her after death in George R.R. Martin’s novels. I think Lady Stark would find herself right at home if she were neighbors with Mr. King.
