Missouri: Davos Seaworth

Davos Seaworth has more than a few ties to water. After all, “sea” is right there in his name. In camp Stannis, he’s widely known for being a smuggler who used to transport goods to the Seven Kingdoms via the Narrow Sea. He’s sometimes called the Onion Knight because of the time he secretly delivered onions to Stannis while the lord was trapped at Storm’s End during Robert’s Rebellion.

It makes sense, then, that Davos would match up well with Missouri, a state known for its many rivers. The famous Missouri River is, in fact, the longest river in North America. Heck, the name Missouri comes from the name of a Sioux Indian tribe, meaning “wooden canoe people.”

It’s also interesting to note that the Missouri state nickname is “the Show-Me State” thanks to its unwavering love for logic and common sense. U.S. Congressman Willard Duncan Vandiver is commonly credited for coining the nickname, saying that eloquence alone would never be enough to convince him of anything; he relied more on proof.

I think it’s a safe bet that Davos would have liked Mr. Vandiver. His king may fall for the intense religion of Melisandre, but Davos always takes more convincing. He believes in reason and is far from gullible. Like all the Missourians out there, if you want Davos to believe something, you have to “show him.”
