Louisiana: Melisandre

“The night is dark and full of terrors.”

Spooky, right? The cult of R’hllor is pretty intense, and that little catch phrase is only the start of it. At the command of the Red Woman Melisandre, so-called “traitors” are burned to death, wars are waged, and even royal children are sacrificed. All of this is done in the name of her mysterious god, imported all the way from Asshai.

Melisandre is quite the witchy woman, making her a good fit for the mysterious Voodoo culture of the Louisiana bayou. While the jury is still out on whether all of the powers she claims to have are indeed real, her abilities go well beyond just smoke and mirrors.

The same goes for Louisiana, where Voodoo is a part of the state’s legacy. For better or worse, it’s hard to find even a single movie set in Louisiana that doesn’t depict the fascinating practice. Some productions could even be said to have popularized it, including American Horror Story: Coven and The Skeleton Key. Voodoo is still around today, with some Louisianians believing in its power just as Stannis believes in Melisandre’s.

If the Red Woman was exploring the American South, I think she could make a home for herself in Louisiana. Her mysterious air would blend seamlessly into a culture with a love for the exotic and powerful.
