Mississippi: Grey Worm

Game of Thrones is about many things — power, history, the apocalypse — including class and race. We can see these elements clearly in Daenerys’ conquest of Slaver’s Bay, where the Mother of Dragons tries to be a representative for the downtrodden and enslaved. One of Dany’s highest ranking leaders, Grey Worm, is a former Unsullied slave warrior himself. From from his forced servitude to the Good Masters of Astapor, he goes on to lead Daenerys’ army.

With all of this in mind, I think Grey Worm is a good match with Mississippi. Every state has things in its past it’s not proud of, and the people of Mississippi have worked hard to overcome a history dotted with incidents of racial violence and hatred, stemming from the days when it was a slave state. Characters like Grey Worm embody the willingness to deal with and move on from such strife. Grey Worm is a former dehumanized slave who has left his past behind to rise through the ranks and serve as right-hand man to an actual queen. His tale is important, and audiences enjoyed him enough that his story was expanded a bit for television. Both he and Mississippi have done the hard job of grappling with a difficult past and moving forward.
