California: Margaery Tyrell

There’s no better fit for the breezy, beautiful Golden State than Queen Margaery Tyrell.

The dearly departed Margaery Tyrell came to King’s Landing from her childhood home in Highgarden. The Reach is far and away the most bountiful and beautiful region of the Seven Kingdoms. It’s well known for its flowers, livestock and wine. Sound familiar?

Highgarden sounds like an expensive pleasure palace somewhere in the wine-soaked Napa Valley. It’s always warm in the Reach; it’s got the lazy beach weather of America’s west coast.

Margaery fits right in at Highgarden and brings a taste of home with her when she arrives in King’s Landing to marry Joffrey. She’s beautiful and fashionable, and her concern for the poor and needy also falls in line with California’s political priorities.

And that’s not where the similarities end. Like California, Margaery wields a great deal of power. As one of the largest states in the Union, the people of California have quite a bit of swing politically, and cities like Los Angeles and San Francisco are major players on the world stage. Margaery, too, has a taste for politics. She might be a pretty face, but you dismiss her as dumb or ill-informed at your peril; she knows how to gain influence, how to make friends in high places, and how to manipulate people. She may act demure, but like California, she’s a powerhouse.
