New Mexico: Doran Martell
Like Arizona, New Mexico is a state that just has to be matched with a Martell. It’s got that same deserty vibe and vibrant culture that’s perfect for anyone from Dorne.
Although his time on the show was brief, you may remember Doran Martell for his clash with the Sand Snakes. He is the prince of Dorne he rules from his oasis in the Water Gardens. For years, he hosted the young Myrcella Baratheon there, and clashed with his nieces after their father Oberyn dies and they want to kill the princess in vengeance.
Doran was very unlike his sometimes reckless younger brother Oberyn. He was raised to rule over Dorne, and his personality reflects his upbringing. It brings to mind the slower pace of New Mexico, which doesn’t have *quite* the reputation for Wild West shenannigans as its neighbor Arizona. New Mexico comes off as a little more cultured, a touch more refined; so it is with Oberyn and Doran.
It’s also worth noting that George R. R. Martin resides in New Mexico. Fans have sometimes compared the author to the Dornish prince, noting how the two seem to place a lot of value on waiting for the right moment rather than speeding up to suit the desires of their subjects/audience. In another world, Martin and Doran may have enjoyed Sante Fe together.
