Alaska: Ygritte

There are plenty of admirable people among the Free Folk I could have matched up with Alaska, but the one that comes to mind is the wild and free-spirited Ygritte.

Fans remember Ygritte’s tumoltuous affair with Jon Snow in seasons 2 through 4. Ygritte was a wildling woman with brilliant red hair. She had a strong personality and was very vocal about her love for the lands beyond the Wall, and about her status as a free woman. She was very strong, and even scaled the Wall itself. Ygritte was easy to love.

Alaska and Ygritte match up well on many levels. First, the obvious: they both live largely isolated from the rest of their country. Ygritte is separated from Westeros by the Wall and Alaska is separated from the contiguous U.S. by Canada. In both cases, these barriers create cultural divides; there’s a wildness to these far lands not easily understood by their mainland friends.

Ygritte would also be at home in Alaska thanks to her outdoorsy lifestyle. She and her people live out on the unforgiving tundra, which necessitates a knowledge of hunting and fighting. She has a deep love and an intimate understanding of nature. Alaskans, of course, live in both the country and the city, but Ygritte would like it best in the uninhabited snowy expanse.
