Vermont: Varys

What would Westeros be without its friendly neighborhood Spider? Varys may do his best work behind the scenes, but he has a major impact on everyone around him.

During the reigns of both Aerys Targaryen and Robert Baratheon, Varys was employed as Master of Whispers. A disciplined information broker, the job suited him well, and his spycraft led to the deaths of many people. But through it all, Varys maintained that his duty was to the realm, not to the ruler. He proves this when, when the country falls into war following the death of King Robert, he later switches sides and advises Daenerys Targaryen. Varys is a power player who knows you don’t have need glory to make a difference.

Vermont is a player on the national state, but like Varys, it can be easily underestimated. It’s a small state — only Wyoming has a smaller population — but it’s home to some pretty recognizable businesses, including Ben & Jerry’s. And it’s the first port of call for maple syrup in the states.

Don’t let either the Green Mountain State or the Spider off of your radar. These two are behind-the-scenes players who know how to get a job done with a minimum of pomp and circumstance.
