Westworld: HBO boss responds to series backlash during TCAs
By Ariba Bhuvad
HBO’s man-in-charge, Casey Bloys, responded to the backlash surrounding Westworld during the TCA’s–stating “it’s not for casual viewers”.
Westworld had a complex and convoluted second season and has faced a wide variety of criticism as a result. During the TCA’s, HBO boss, Casey Bloys addressed a question from one of the TCA corps that was inquiring about the backlash leaving us to wonder if the concern will impact season three’s story.
Bloys immediately came to the defense of the show and disagreed about the backlash being widespread. He stated there are people who love the show and even those that are opposed to it are dissecting the ins and outs of it. It calls for debate, and it’s exactly what they’re looking for from a series like this.
Before the season began, HBO gave the first five episodes to critics and Bloys pointed out that critics felt the story was clear and clarified and went on to say that series is “not for casual viewers”. Boy, do we agree with that–can’t be on your phone during an episode, ever.
The showrunners enjoy invoking and producing a series that makes the viewers feel challenged, and they sure have done a great job of that.
Another reporter highlighted the topic of gun violence in the series to which Bloys responded that the show is set in a western setting, and HBO has other shows that display nudity and violence. Also the fact that the show airs at 9 PM, the nature of the show was not a concern for them.
At heart of it, Westworld is known for its deep, philosophical narrative, and has us question our future in the world we live in, especially in regards to A.I. It has sparked a lot of debate and has us talking about what will come next, and if we’re being honest–we love everything about it!
