CW executive admits there may never be a Supernatural spinoff
By Dan Selcke
Supernatural is a show about two brothers who criss-cross the USA battling demons, monsters, ghosts and other spooky things. Although never a mega hit on the scale of, say, Game of Thrones, the show does have a ravenous fan base that has kept it on the air for 13 damn seasons, with a 14th on the way. That makes it the longest-running live-action American fantasy series in television history, which boggles the brain a bit.
In that time, The CW has made multiple attempts to create a Supernatural spinoff, first with a series called Supernatural: Bloodlines, which would have explored the “clashing hunter and monster cultures in Chicago”; and again with Wayward Sisters, which would have revolved around Kim Rhodes’ character, Sheriff Jody Mills. But neither of those ever came to pass. It’s just been Sam and Dean Winchester (Jared Padalecki and Jensen Ackles), bearing the standard for the franchise on their lonesome. Now, speaking at the Television Critics Association press tour, CW president Mark Pedowitz admitted that a franchise just might not be in the cards:
"We were very happy with the women who were in the Wayward Sisters spinoff. We have a certain number of slots this year. It just did not get there. Supernatural may be Jensen and Jared — and there may not be a franchise beyond that."
It’s a little odd that people at The CW couldn’t find a way to spin this series off considering that the network is already chock-a-block with DC superhero shows that cross over with each other on the regular. But it’s one thing to to make shows based on existing source material and another to forge your own path. HBO is doing a little of both with its Game of Thrones spinoff about the Age of Heroes, which will hopefully be all the spinoff the world needs for a while.
