Doctor Who spin-off review: Class: Brave-ish Heart

April faces the Shadow King in battle, while Charlie is forced to make a terrible choice in the fifth episode of Doctor Who spin-off Class, Brave-ish Heart!
Continuing directly where Co-Owner of a Lonely Heart left off, Brave-ish Heart features April and Ram alone on the planet of the Shadow Kin, while the rest of the gang have to make a very difficult choice.
By far the most interesting part of this episode was the dilemma faced by Charlie, Quill and Ames. Particularly the choice that Charlie has to make – wipe out the petals to save humanity, commit genocide on the race that destroyed his own, or let his own race’s souls continue to exist.
It’s quite an interesting dilemma, and it’s difficult to predict which choice he’ll make. Katherine Kelly quite possibly gives her best performance as Quill in this episode, as we see her pure desperation at wiping out the Shadow Kin.
Dorothea Ames continues to be an intriguing character. I always love a character where you’re not entirely sure whose side they’re really on, or you’re left guessing what their motives really are. (You only need to read my article on Doctor Who spin-off series Gallifrey to see just how much I love Braxiatel for exactly those reasons.) I’m looking forward to seeing more of her.

I wasn’t keen on April’s and Ram’s storyline, which of course was the real focus of this episode. I’m still not convinced by their relationship.
How Ram’s faith was brought up didn’t feel convincing, either. I’m not saying that it couldn’t have been explored, but it definitely could’ve been handled in a much more natural way.
In my last review, I said I enjoyed a good two-parter, and I do. But this one was only average for me. When it focused on Charlie and Quill, the story was very strong. But when it focused on April and Ram, it definitely wasn’t as interesting.
Still, the two-parter did shake things up for many of the characters at least. And I’m still intrigued by what the series will bring. (Especially the next episode. Detained looks set to be an episode that will appeal to me greatly.)
