By his own admission, A Song of Ice and Fire author George R.R. Martin makes fewer public appearances than he used to; The Winds of Winter isn’t going to finish itself, after all. But he does make exceptions, the biggest being the World Science Fiction Convention, aka WorldCon. “I have cut way down on the number of cons I attend, due to the press of work,” Martin writes on his Not a Blog, “but there’s no way I’d miss a worldcon, by any name. I’ve only missed one in the last thirty years.”

The 76th annual Worldcon will go down at the San Jose McEnery Convention Center in San Jose, CA starting Thursday, August 16. Martin will be there, signing books and sitting on panels (not anything related to A Song of Ice and Fire, though). You can find out more here.

But a couple days before that, on August 14, Martin will be at the Fox Theater in Redwood City, California. He’ll be talking onstage to Worldcon Artist Guest of Honor John Picacio, a science fiction and fantasy illustrator who created, among a great many other things, the artwork for the first-ever A Song of Ice and Fire calendar in 2012.

Martin and Picacio will “delve into a discussion on literature, art, and life” before opening it up to audience questions. There’s no guarantee Martin will talk about A Song of Ice and Fire and/or Game of Thrones, but that’s certainly within the purview.

You can find out more info about the event here, and buy tickets here. SF in SF, which organized the talk, was kind enough to give us a code you can use to get a discount! Right before you proceed to checkout, enter the code GRR25 to get 25% off your tickets.

Proceeds for this event go to support the non-profit Locus SF Foundation, which runs Locus Magazine, the long-standing journal of record for science fiction and fantasy.
