Thandie Newton: Life before Westworld and Maeve
By Ariba Bhuvad
Thandie Newton had just about given up acting before landing the unforgettable role of Maeve on HBO’s Westworld.
Thandie Newton had a life before Westworld? Say what?! It’s hard to grasp or comprehend that some of the actors on the hit HBO series had a life before the series began, especially considering how many years it has already spanned between its inception to the season 2 finale.
According to an interview Newton did with Deadline, she had just about given up on acting before landing the iconic role of Maeve. She considered leaving acting behind so she could focus on other areas of filmmaking and focus on her home life. But things never quite turn out as we anticipate, do they?
Thandie Newton is known for her active role in philanthropy and as she contemplated moving on from acting, she realized that she had much more to offer the world than the roles that were being given to her.
"“And I’d found myself being in situations where I was being exploited, plain and simple. Whether it was with nudity, whether it was with using the skills that I’d honed and taken time to grow, and I really care about what I do, as an actor, and I’m using those skills to say words that I couldn’t fully get behind, as a political activist, as a thinker, as an anthropologist who’s got a degree from Cambridge University. “"
It’s safe to say that since Westworld, Newton has been quite busy especially with her most recent role in Solo: A Star Wars Story as Val Beckett. However, let’s not forget the career that led her down the path to Westworld including a recurring role on ER as Makemba.
We are excited to see what the future holds for her, and are excited to see where the next season of Westworld will take her character (if she’s alive or actually dead, you never really know with Westworld). She is everyone’s spirit animal and her philanthropic efforts along with the amazing talent she possesses make her #goals for all of us.
