Westworld Throwback Thursday: The cast’s favorite moments from season 1
By Ariba Bhuvad
Westworld season 1 gave us some of the most epic moments in television history with twists and turns that left our heads spinning for months following the finale. And just like us, the cast has their favorite moments from the epic premiere season–so let’s find out, shall we?
Westworld gave us a whole new world when it first premiered in 2016. The first season was full of so many surprises as we learned the ins and outs of this complicated world of hosts, humans, and the in between.
And while we have our list of favorite moments from the first season, so does the cast! The official HBO site has listed the moments the cast found exciting and riveting to perform, as well as watch just like fans do. The twists and turns of the plot had them scratching their hands just as much as us (thank goodness!).
As we anxiously await for season 3 news and updates, let’s go back to reflect on some of the cast’s favorite moments from season 1 of Westworld in honor of Throwback Thursday. Perhaps, they’re the same as yours!
Season 1, Episode 5: “Contrapasso”
Based on the official HBO site, Jimmi Simpson specifically mentioned the Confederado showdown in Pariah in this episode. For those who can’t recall, Logan takes William and Dolores through Pariah but chaos takes things for a wild turn. Simpson noted:
"“It’s where Westworld stops being a game and more of a life for William. That’s where he detaches from Logan and attaches to Dolores.”"
Evan Rachel Wood also pointed out something in this episode as a turning point for Dolores. There is a line of dialogue in which Dolores says, “I imagined a story where I didn’t have to be the damsel”. Wood recalls this being a very big moment for the character of Dolores as well for Wood herself.
Season 1, Episode 8: “Trace Decay”
Many will remember this episode as the one that Maeve begins her journey towards consciousness. After she sees videos of herself in the Delos lab, it triggers the haunting memories of her past–her daughter and the Man in Black murdering them.
Thandie Newton recalls this moment giving her the chills–and we were right there with her.
"“I remember when we shot it, they actually carved out the maze in the dirt; I knew then it was going to be an epic moment.”"
Season 1, Episode 7: “Trompe L’Oeil”
Ah, yes. This episode gave us one of the most epic reveals of the first season–Bernard is a host. Fans everywhere watched in excitement and confusion as we started to piece together what the episode was trying to tell us.
Jeffrey Wright recalls that this Bernard reveal was “really reflective of the overall themes of the show and the direction of the narrative.” And we’d have to agree. From this point on, we pretty much suspected every character of being a host, and this tradition continued well through the second season finale.
Wright reflected on the fan reaction and took it as a good sign that we all absolutely loved it.
"“It’s indicative of the fact that fans were compelled and bit down hard on our little offering. It obviously sets up a lot for Bernard going forward.”"
Why yes Mr. Wright, it sure does.
Another moment in this episode is when Bernard kills Theresa–how brutal was that? Dr. Ford did not want to jeopardize the park in any way, and he was willing to go to any lengths to ensure he did. Rodrigo Santoro, who plays Hector, recalls this being a scene that really stood out to him and illustrated how great Jeffrey Wright is as an actor.
Season 1, Episode 9: “The Well-Tempered Clavier”
In the penultimate episode of Westworld season 1, Logan attacks Dolores to try and snap William back to reality. She manages to get away but this is essentially what causes William’s obsession to track Dolores down over the next few decades.
This is Ben Barnes’ favorite scene, who plays the devilishly handsome Logan. He states that the scene was “dark and twisted”. However, he went on to say that “if you think about it, Logan’s the only reasonable person. It was fun to get into that psyche.”
Season 1, Episode 10: “The Bicameral Mind”
That William is Man in Black reveal, though! This was season 1’s craziest fan theory come true, and we still can’t get over the scene where it all comes to life. While many spent the entire season speculating that there were two timelines and perhaps these two characters were one in the same, it was still just as shocking when we finally came to learn this was indeed the case.
Ingrid Bolso Berdal, who plays Armistice, agrees with the sentiment that shocking season 1 twist brought. And despite reading the script, she confessed she still didn’t catch the two timelines!
