Westworld season 1 was a whirlwind ride as we navigated through a number of reveals that we didn’t see coming (and some we definitely did). But perhaps the best reveal of all was the one involving Bernard.

Westworld season 1, episode 7 was a fan favorite across the board. And while season 1 in its entirety was an epic season of television, episode 7 really took us by surprise. If for any reason at all, you have not seen this episode or season 1 of Westworld, please do not read ahead!

It became fun to speculate what was going on in the first season of this hit HBO series because why not? Often times, we had no idea what was going on, and sometimes our outlandish guesses would actually come true.

As we reflect back on this Thursday to this iconic moment in Westworld history, let’s revisit what led us to this moment and how it changed the way we would watch this show forever. Seriously, it planted seeds of suspicion in us that still hasn’t quite left.

Remember the line of dialogue, “It doesn’t look like anything to me?” Well, this particular line carried more weight than the sentence suggests. Ford designed the hosts so they would only see and understand what they are meant to–case in point, Bernard.

In fact, Bernard had no idea he was even a host (us too, bud). In “Trompe L’Oeil” we learned that Bernard is far more than Ford’s BFF, but he is also his precious host creation. And if we didn’t believe it to be true, then the final moments of the episode were enough to convince us.

Ford asks Bernard to kill Theresa because she now threatens what Ford’s plans are for Westworld, and he can’t have any obstacles in the way. Almost effortlessly, Bernard takes Theresa’s head and bashes it against the wall twice. Oh, the horror!

But perhaps what was more suspenseful about the reveal was watching it all be realized through Theresa’s eyes. When Bernard takes her to see Ford’s secret host family, two instances immediately pop out. She sees a door that he does not, and then sees a sketch of robot Bernard that he cannot.

Ford designed the hosts to not see everything because if they could see sketches of themselves or hear others refers to them as robots–well, they’d self-implode over their own existence.

We can never forget how we felt as we learned about Bernard’s true identity which has basically thrown fans in suspicious paranoia since then as we assume or suspect everyone is a host now. It’s become a fun guessing game and really set the tone of Westworld and how we perceive the story as it continues to unfold.
