22) BENJEN STARK (Previous Ranking: Unranked)

You don’t get to be the First Ranger of the Night’s Watch if you can’t handle yourself north of the Wall. That said, Benjen Stark vanishes during a ranging in season 1 and doesn’t reappear until season 6. He returns as a hooded horseman swinging a flaming morningstar, coming to the rescue when Brandon Stark and Meera Reed are about to be overrun by the army of the dead. But at this point, Benjen is a very changed man, if he indeed is still a man at all.

With a face drained of all color, Benjen describes how he was attacked by White Walkers, stabbed in the stomach with an ice sword and left to die. The Children of the Forest saved him as best they could, healing his wound with their ancient magic. But Benjen is now transformed, a being perhaps more dead than alive, called into action by the Three-eyed Raven.

Benjen eventually sacrifices himself saving Jon Snow in “Beyond the Wall,” but he takes plenty of wights down him before he dies for good. Human or otherwise, Benjen has warrior-hero stamped all over him.
