Fans were disappointed when Class was cancelled, leaving a number of threads unresolved. But could the series continue with Big Finish in charge? (Spoilers for Series One follow.)
When Class finished Series One with The Lost, fans were left hanging with a lot of questions. What had happened to April? Just how dangerous were the Governors? And the Weeping Angels?!? How were they involved?!
Sadly, the first series of the Doctor Who spin-off also turned out to be its last, as the BBC cancelled it several months later. Unsurprisingly, this was a huge disappointment to fans of the show, particularly at how many major threads would be left unresolved.
Then, in 2018, Big Finish announced that they would be making brand new episodes of Class. These wouldn’t continue from where the series left off, however. Instead, all six episodes would be set during the original series.
Having listened to both volumes one and two, I can safely say that Big Finish did a great job at capturing everything great about the original TV series. In fact, their audio interpretation might actually be even better.
So, the big question that we have to ask is: could Big Finish continue where the TV series left off?
How Torchwood could help
Really thinking about it, it’s not hard to see them handling Series Two of Class. For one thing, it wouldn’t even be the first continuation that they’ve done of a cancelled TV spin-off. Last year, after telling many stories set during the first four series, they made the official fifth series of Torchwood.
While a very small (but sadly vocal) minority were upset about this, the majority of Torchwood fans were incredibly happy. It didn’t continue directly where the cliffhanger for Miracle Day left off, but it brought back enough old characters and introduced enough new ones to feel like a true continuation. Better still, it brought Torchwood back home to Cardiff and reminded us why the city was so important.
It also helped that, while he didn’t exactly write for the series, barring one scene, Russell T Davies did provide many useful suggestions for Series Five. So the whole thing had a great deal of authenticity to it.
We’ve seen how Big Finish have handled Class so far. What could it do with Series Two?

More possibilities
Would Patrick Ness do the same if Big Finish wanted to make Series Two of Class? Probably not. Even before the show had been officially cancelled, Ness confirmed that he would no longer write for the series.
But Big Finish have a very strong and capable writing team. You only need to listen to the audio episodes of Class so far to hear how much they understand and enjoy the universe that these characters inhabit. You can hear them doing justice to the original stories, while at the same time, also improving upon them.
There’s also only so many stories that you could tell during that one and only first series. Big Finish took two years to tell Torchwood stories before finally giving us Series Five. But it also had a much larger timeline to play with. Class only had one series, so telling stories in the gaps between those eight episodes is considerably more limiting.
A matter of success
So honestly, if Big Finish were to make more Class audios, it’s not just a matter that they could make them. It’s more that they should. And believe me, I definitely want more stories of Class from Big Finish. Just the first six audio episodes already have impressed me with the directions that they’ve managed to take the series in.

- Final season of Star Trek: Discovery will have “a lot of action, a lot of adventure, a lot of fun”
As for how likely it is? Well, it really does depend on how successful the first two volumes are. Big Finish generate a lot of output, but if a product’s not selling, they won’t make any more of it. It’s why we sadly won’t be getting any more of The Omega Factor, the best supernatural series set in Scotland ever. (Why, Big Finish, why?!?)
But I’m confidant that, while Class was cancelled due to low ratings on television, it will find an audience in the audio medium. Not just because of the quality of the stories, but also because of some very clever marketing, particularly with volume two.
Seriously, if including Ace was enough to get this fan to actually watch the series for the first time, it’s bound to attract some hardcore fans of the series, too. So I think that there is a good chance of an official Class continuation on audio. It’s only a matter of time.
What do you think? Do you think there’s a strong chance of Big Finish continuing the story of Class? Do you want Big Finish to continue the story, or do you think that there is still a chance that it could come back on TV? Let us know in the comments below.
