Singer-songwriter Ed Sheeran’s cameo in Game of Thrones season 7 was undoubtedly one of the most popular moments in the show’s history…I’m kidding, everyone one hated it. Well, almost everyone. Sheeran was asked to do the cameo because showrunners David Benioff and Dan Weiss wanted to surprise Maisie Williams (Arya) who, as it turns out, is a huge fan of his.
Recently, Buzzfeed caught up with Sheeran for a video interview where they attacked him with cute and cuddly kittens in order to disarm him for the real hard-hitting questions from his fans. As you might expect, one question, in particular, was about his Game of Thrones cameo. Fast forward to the 3:12 mark for that.
“I know what Game of Thrones fans hope happened to my character,” Sheeran said. “I’m sure they think my character got brutally, brutally murdered, but I think my character is still out there. I think he’s chilling.”
He’s not wrong, fans really did want this character to get murdered, but perhaps we should mark that up to an overly enthusiastic fanbase? Maybe they don’t like pop music?
Okay, maybe not. Despite the backlash from fans, there was always a possibility Sheeran’s Lannister soldier could make an appearance in season 8. We didn’t see him die in the infamous Loot Train Attack when Daenerys Targaryen’s forces literally torched the Lannister army. However, Sheeran has doused the flame of hope that we would see him again, saying: “No one wants to see me come back. I wanted to be a cameo in it, and I’ve done the cameo. I’m cool with it, though. I enjoyed it.”
"It was fun being on Game of Thrones, but I definitely think they should have killed me off in the episode. I reckon that probably would have been the redemption for people that didn’t like it."
At least Sheeran was able to enjoy his time on the show before fans raised their pitchforks and began calling for his head. I didn’t have a problem with it…but then again, I can separate fantasy from reality. Here’s hoping Justin Bieber gets a cameo in season 8.
